Citywide Exhibitions
During the month of July, Denver and Metropolitan Denver’s most notable artistic and cultural centers will celebrate The Biennial of the Americas. Through a series of collaborative events and house exhibitions, the Biennial's Metro-Denver partners will honor the ideas, progress and vision of the Americas, and illuminate the diverse cultures of the Western Hemisphere.
New institutional partners are being added to the Biennial lineup every week, and programming is being added to those institutions already confirmed as participants. Please come back to our website regularly to see what's new.

Art District on Santa Fe
The Art District’s Biennial Events include the Secret Life of Trees, a sculpture and light street installation embodying Denver’s quest for 1,000,000 trees, unveiling July 1 at 8:30 p.m. First Friday Art Walk, a multi-block gallery walk will take place on July 2 5:30-9:30 p.m. and the Passport to the Arts gallery tour featuring emerging and established artists, discussion, stimulation and rewards, will run from July 16-18.

Buntport Theater Company
A vibrant ensemble of six people, the Buntport Theater Company is creating an original performance entitled Grounds for Play for the Biennial. Grounds for Play is a celebration of space and place. It will be a playground for the mind, host a Buntportian debate of Chicago or Boston (band and/or city), and undergo transformation during Art vs. Art -- an evening full of exciting live challenges that resemble Iron Chef and Layer Tennis.

Butterfly Pavilion
Take a self-guided tour through a tropical rainforest and learn all about tropical plants and butterflies from the Americas at the Butterfly Pavilion as part of the Biennial of the Americas during the month of July. An informational map will help visitors identify the plants and butterflies, as well as provide insight and facts about some of the worlds most beautiful flora and fauna of North, Central and South America. The 2-hour self-guided tour is included with the price of admission, and will be provided in both English and Spanish. Visitors can also access the Butterfly Pavilion’s outdoor butterfly gardens where signs will identify additional species of plants native to North and South America. Capsule
Capsule will be presenting an exhibition entitled Objectophilia. Objectophilia is a love of objects so intense that individuals form emotional relationship with inanimate things. This exhibition asks artists to examine their relationship to commercially manufactured items and icons and the impact it has on the world around us.

Caribbean Steel Drum Program
From July 11-16, Pan Ramajay and the University of Denver will sponsor a Steel Drum Workshop, devoted to the studies of steel drum and caribbean music styles. The workshop will culminate in a free concert on July 16 in Gates Hall at the Newman Center with Ray Holman, renowned steel drum composer and performer from Trinidad and Tobago.

Central City Opera
En Mis Palabras is a classic story that every student, no matter what his or her cultural background, can relate to – the adolescent dilemma of finding your own voice, learning who you are – and the adult dilemma of knowing when and how much to let go so that a young adult may safely develop that sense of self. Fully staged with scenery and costumes, En Mis Palabras is scored for four singers, classical guitar and piano and sung in both English and Spanish.

Children's Museum of Denver
In honor of the Biennial of the Americas, join the Children’s Museum of Denver and the Mexican Cultural Center for a Cultural KidsFest Celebrating Mexico on Wednesday, July 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Kids and their grownups will learn about Mexican culture through traditional dance and indigenous arts and crafts. Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Amphitheatre
The Mile High Dance Festival: Celebrating the Dances of the Americas. Cleo Parker Robinson Dance presents an evening of dance that celebrates the cultural and historic connections between dance in Colorado and the Americas. Featuring the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Fiesta Colorado, Hannah Kahn Dance Company, Kim Olson/Sweet Edge, Folklorico Sabor Latino and more. Launching the 40th Anniversary Season of Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, the performance will explore the rich and diverse dance cultures of Colorado and the Americas. July 17th at 7pm. More +

Civic Center Park Temporary Public Art: 1.26
A large netted aerial sculpture by Artist Janet Echelman—inspired by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) simulation of the earthquake’s ensuing tsunami—floats high above the traffic of downtown Denver, suspended between the Denver Art Museum and Civic Center Park. Echelman’s monumental installation 1.26 engages with issues of temporality and interconnectedness surrounding the 1.26-microsecond shortening of the day that resulted from the February 2010 Chile earthquake’s redistribution of the earth’s mass. Colorado Chamber Players
On July 19, the Colorado Chamber Players will perform a free concert at Museo de las Americas featuring the chamber music of Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. The show will take place at 7:30 p.m. Composers of the 20th century (Ginastera, Revueltas, Piazzolla) will be featured, with musical styles ranging from tango to milonga to classical. Programs will be presented in English and Spanish. A reception follows the concert.

CM Dance
Celebrating the Biennial of the Americas, CMDance is proud to host the famous dance ensemble Grupo Folklorico Copelec from Chillan, Chile. Grupo Copelec will be in Colorado July 15-25th teaching folkoric dance workshops and performing around the front range. A highlight of their visit will be a celebration of social dance at the HOT Night Dance in Denver on July 17th. This event features dances from across the Americas - including tango from Argentina, traditional blues dance of the USA, and a performance by the Grupo Copelec. Colorado Symphony Orchestra
The Colorado Symphony celebrates the 2010 Biennial of the Americas with a concert at Boettcher Concert Hall on July 24 at 7:30 p.m. The program will showcase symphonic music by composers from the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. As Colorado’s premier symphony orchestra, the Colorado Symphony takes part in the Biennial of the Americas by bringing symphonic programming of the highest quality to the City of Denver. This concert is free to the public* and presented in partnership by the Colorado Symphony, Mexican Consulate, Mexican Cultural Center and Biennial of the Americas 2010. Denver Art Dealers Association (DADA)
Denver’s cultural life would not be the same without the Denver Art Dealers Association (DADA). DADA is a partnership of fine art galleries that provides the experience any collector seeks, within a variety of genres and mediums. DADA advances standards of excellence and is considered among the curatorial leaders of Denver galleries. Denver is forging a reputation as one of the leading American cities for collecting and appreciation of art. You will find engaging artwork of all kinds in visiting the members of the Denver Art Dealers Association. At the Sandra Phillips Gallery, Ecuador born artist Patricia Tinajero explores notions of recycling and regeneration creating an installation of milk cartons, newspapers and paper made from scraps of denim. Denver Botanic Gardens
Denver Botanic Gardens’ Botanical Art and Illustration Certificate Program, now in its 20th year, recently launched a collaborative exchange program with El Charco del Ingenio in San Miguel de Allende. The collaboration aims to engage in a dialogue about some of our shared natural resources. El Charco has the second largest living cacti collection in Mexico and the 300 acres of its area are dedicated to the restoration and conservation of native ecosystems. DBG classes offered in San Miguel de Allende include: Illustration in Watercolor (July 10 – 16), Botanical Landscapes (July 11 – 16), and Flower Portraits in Pencil & Color (Sept. 27 – Oct. 1). Denver International Airport
The airport’s temporary exhibit program is featuring various exhibits representing the Biennial, ranging from murals created by Denver high school students to a comprehensive collection of works by Mexican artist Alvaro Santiago. Works include: Me Rento Para Soñar, works by renowned Mexican artist, Alvaro Santiago, in an exhibition sponsored by the Mexican Consulate in Denver and located on the Mezzanine Gallery level in Concourse A. Denver’s “Change Your City” campaign, 2Kool and high school students from Denver’s West High School have created two murals at Denver International Airport titled “Create Change.” The murals are also located on the Mezzanine Gallery level in Concourse A. Denver artists are on display in an exhibition from The Denver Art Dealers Association, located at the “Y Juncture” between Concourse A and Jeppesen Terminal.Denver’s Museo de las Americas has provided works from its collection for an exhibition located at the center of C Concourse. Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys
The DMMDT provides educational and cultural services through the preservation, exhibition, collection and interpretation of the visual arts using miniatures, dolls and toys. The DMMDT will create an exhibition that will run for the month of July for the Biennial entitled Dolls of the Americas. It will be an exhibition that celebrates the diversity of dolls of the Americas, featuring antique and modern dolls.

Denver Public Library
DPL will feature a Mexican photo exhibition at the Central Library entitled ABC's of Disabilities a celebration of the possibilities and accomplishments of the disabled. In addition, the DPL Fresh City Life will host two Canadian films as a part of KnitFlix and offer cooking demonstrations of the street food of Peru and Mexico, culminating in Salsa Wars, a community-competition to determine Colorado's best salsa.

Emmanuel Gallery
Beginning July 9th Emmanuel Gallery, the oldest standing church structure in Denver, will be transformed into a Personal Locator Beacon. Typically used for urgent calls, Rebecca Vaughan's Personal Locator Beacon will serve as a signal for the gallery visitors' LOVE.

Walking through the space, guests trigger a wave of fans blowing the scent of the Golden Chalice vine, a plant known to create amorous affects in humans. These messages of love are sent out to the world, through a fanciful mixture of baroque ornament, electronic effects and hand-crocheted rosettes.

eTown
Marrying mission and music, eTown’s Green Rocks is a celebration of musical expression and environmental consciousness. Green Rocks features Lyle Lovett and His Large Band and special guest Taj Mahal, both performing full sets; the eco-educational eTown Square; an inspirational E-Chievement award presentation to a community-based problem solver and more, all in one of the world’s most stunning natural arenas, Red Rocks Amphitheatre. eTown Radio Show hosts, Nick and Helen Forster, lead the festivities. Amongst the events ‘green’ initiatives, attendees are invited to ride bio-diesel buses to Red Rocks and will be rewarded for carpooling. More information is available at etown.org.

History Colorado
Join History Colorado on July 14th for the American Indians in Early Denver walking tour of lower downtown Denver. You’ll explore the interactions between Arapahoe Indians and white settlers in early Denver, highlighting the positive and the negative occurrences in the quickly changing western landscape of 1858-59. The tour will conclude with lunch at Tocabe, a traditional American Indian eatery.

This year's event will have a Biennial theme and will take place on Thursday, July 15 at La Alma/Lincoln Park and will feature Panamanian superstar Horacio Valdes. Other performers are expected to be added.

M12: ¡Rediseñar los Campitos! is a multi-disciplinary artwork based on mobile architecture, landscape, collaboration, and social responsibility. M12's goal is to thoroughly study the past and current design principles employed by today’s sheep wagons, research the conditions in and around the structure, and ultimately redesign and construct, Campito, a prototype for what a sheep wagon can become in the 21st century.

Energy Effects is a large scale exhibition at MCA Denver exploring the relationship between energy and aesthetic power. Expanding the definition of energy, this exhibition presents a variety of ways that creativity advocates energy expenditure. From Washington DC-based artist Jim Sanborn’s working model of the first atom-splitting particle accelerator to Buenos Aires-based Ciro Najle’s experiments in irrational engineering; this exhibition explores the power and beauty of excess energy.

Weidenblume - The structure is constructed with dormant willow rods, based on the Sumerian reed constructions in Mesopotamia. Planted and sculpted over an armature to create a biodome 42’ in diameter and 18’ high, the willows take root and grow into a living sculpture over the course of several years.
Design and Build – Recycled Dwelling Project - Recycled dwellings will be designed and constructed by MOA’s Design and Build interns. Recycled materials will be utilized for the construction of the three dwellings of approximately 100 SF.
[p.s] Designed as a true platonic solid, [p.s] will be a convex polyhedron, built as a three-dimensional pentagon. Designed by Denver architect, Douglas Eichelberger, the [p.s.] units are intended for use as backyard offices, studios, or gathering places. More + -

On July 10, Cuernavaca Park and the Denver Skate Park will play host to a Native American exposition entitled, Our Nations Energies, an event focusing on reeducating and empowering our native nations of today through individuality, family, community, health environment and spirituality. It will include an All Nations Skate Jam, an Eco Cultural Village, Music Groups and other performers.

Plus Gallery
You are Here is an exhibition of visual art that features the works of five remarkable talents working at the forefront of contemporary art and innovation from Canada. Brendan Tang, Alex McLeod, Douglas Walker, Andrew Rucklidge and Luke Painter all create artworks of an elusive nature, warping both the sense of place and culture. Hosted at Denver's prestigious Plus Gallery in conjunction with the Canadian Consulate, the exhibition provides an exquisite opportunity to view world class art from leading artists of today. Brendan Tang, a current nominee for Canada's Sobey Art Award, will be in attendance for the opening reception on July 9th and will also present an artist talk at the gallery on July 10th at 4pm. From Peter Menzel's award winning photographs of food consumption to the Earthship of Michael Reynolds, the exhibition reflects on crucial issues of food and shelter. Los Angeles artists' collective Fallen Fruit rediscover public fruits. Amy Youngs' living installations transform compost into nutrients for edible plants. Recalling life in her native Ecuador, Patricia Tinajero builds structures to collect rainwater. Other artists use alternative materials and processes from horse manure to moss and discarded plastic bags.

Su Teatro
Su Teatro is an award winning cultural arts center and theatre company which will begin its first season in residency at Su Teatro @ the Denver Civic Theatre in the Santa Fe Drive Arts District, the nationally recognized theatrical company Su Teatro offers a full season of productions under the direction of Artistic Director Anthony J. The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service is proud to present IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives>, an exhibition developed by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Through compelling text and powerful graphics, IndiVisible is the first national exhibition to explore the fusion of African and Native American lives. The exhibition will examine the fluctuating dynamics of race, community, culture, and addresses the human desire to belong. By combining the voices of the living with those of their ancestors, IndiVisible provides historical and contemporary stories of peoples and communities of African and Native American descent in the U.S., Caribbean, Central America, and northern coast of South America.The exhibiton will be on display in the Webb Building during the Month of July. The Urban Culture Collective of Denver
The Urban Culture Collective (UCC) is a daylong festival showcasing the talent of today’s global hip-hop and urban culture movement. Partnering with the Biennial of The Americas and Denver’s annual Mighty 4 breakdance competition, this free event in Skyline Park on July 10th will be the largest celebration of urban culture in Colorado and the West. Featured performances, demonstrations, and competitions will include breakdancing, beat boxing, live music, DJ competition, poetry, spoken word, graffiti art, and fashion.

Celebrating the artistic achievements of the Western Hemisphere, DU’s Newman Center Presents the YOA Orchestra of the Americas. Supported by the Organization of American States, and with young musicians from 18 countries in our hemisphere, the YOA will perform music by composers from 5 nations of the Americas in Gates Concert Hall on Friday, July 9. This event is free to the public.
