Pipelines

by Coryn Kempster and Julia Jamrozik

Plaza of the Americas, 1550 Wewatta St. Denver, CO

April 25, 2023 — September 10, 2023

Pipelines is a temporary, outdoor art installation by Canadian artists Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster, located in the newly renamed Plaza of the Americas in the heart of Downtown Denver. This playful, interactive artwork repurposes over 100 PVC water and sewer pipes commonly used for water infrastructure across the world. This artwork is presented by the Biennial of the Americas with artistic direction by Black Cube Nomadic Art Museum.

Woven together in an occupiable graphic lattice, these color-coded pipes represent important parts of our water usage cycle at once: blue pipes are used by the PVC pipe industry to identify fresh water, green for sewage, and purple for grey water. By bringing often-hidden yet crucial pieces of material infrastructure above ground and introducing them as a form of social infrastructure in a public plaza, Jamrozik and Kempster invite viewers to sit amongst, and connect across, the systems of resource management that impact our daily lives.

Pipelines aims to make visible and prominent a system that is vital, yet often taken for granted or ignored—an attitude no longer possible in times of environmental crisis and resource scarcity.” —Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster
