Kyle Koontz

Mr. Koontz joined bp in December 2016 and currently serves as the CEO of bpx energy, the subsidiary onshore exploration and production company for bp. Through various prior roles he has helped initiate the oil strategy conversion in the onshore business, started a new central reserves team, led business units in the Midcontinent and Permian, and worked with the team to formulate a multi-year, low carbon, development strategy in support bp’s purpose of reimagining energy for people and our planet.
Mr. Koontz brings passion, innovation, and problem solving to his servant leadership approach, practiced over a dynamic, fast paced career of large-scale asset and portfolio management spanning almost 20 years. That experience includes asset development in multiple basins overseeing more than $6bn of capital investment in various capacities.
Prior to joining bp, he served as one of the co-founders of Templar Energy where he helped the management team grow the start-up company into the nation’s 27th largest natural gas producer. Mr. Koontz previously held various roles at SandRidge Energy, and Wallace Engineering and has also served on the Young Professionals Executive Board of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, as a Future Leader member of Oklahoma Independents Petroleum Association and as a board member for the Oklahoma Oil and Gas Association.
Mr. Koontz earned a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from Oklahoma State University and a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. In 2015 Mr. Koontz received national recognition in Hart Energy's Oil and Gas Investor "Top Thirty under 40" publication.
Mr. Koontz lives in Denver with his wife and three kids, and loves snowboarding, wake surfing, mountain biking, and tennis.
