ALTO GALLERY: BLUE GIANT - JOHNNY DRACO SOLO EXHIBITION

  • Alto Gallery 1900 35th Street Denver, CO, 80216 United States (map)

Join the Culture Club for an intimate evening at Alto Gallery to explore Blue Giant, a captivating solo exhibition by Johnny Draco.

An essential pillar of Denver’s creative ecosystem, Alto Gallery is a critically lauded contemporary space owned and operated by the non-profit Birdseed Collective. Dedicated to championing emerging, diverse, and BILPOC creators, the gallery has enriched our city's cultural landscape for over a decade.

For this excursion, we dive into the abstract, character-rich worlds of painter Johnny Draco and his solo exhibition, Blue Giant. Blue Giant explores a moment of expansion when growth becomes unavoidable and the work begins to push beyond its own boundaries. In this body of work, Draco moves from abstraction into silhouette and defined figures, building a visual language rooted in Black identity and the African diaspora. The work leans into a more immersive, themed experience where each piece contributes to a larger sense of presence and memory. The title draws from a star entering its blue giant phase, a period of intensity, scale, and transformation. These works reflect that evolution, pushing outward into something more expansive and fully realized.

Blue Giant marks a turning point in Draco’s practice where familiar elements are expanded and reworked into a new visual language.
