A Colorado native, Alec earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from The College of Wooster and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Colorado Denver. Prior to his elected service, Garnett served as the Executive Director of the Colorado Democratic Party. He was first elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 2014, representing District 2 in Denver, and subsequently served as Speaker of the House from 2021 to 2023. He later transitioned to the role of Chief of Staff to Governor Jared Polis, serving from 2023 to 2024. He is currently the VP of Government and Regulatory Affairs for UCHealth. Alec is married to Emily Garnett with three children; Ashton (9), Adella (6) and Anders (3).
