The Mirror Stage

Created for the 2013 Biennial of the Americas as part of Draft Urbanism, by June14 Meyer-Grohbrügge & Chermayeff, an architecture office based in Berlin and New York, this installation reimagined Denver's 16th Street Mall through a series of suspended butterfly enclosures that transformed familiar public space into a site of shared curiosity and reflection. Elevated above the street and containing everyday site furnishings, the structures expanded the visual volume of the mall while inviting visitors to reconsider how urban environments are occupied and experienced.

Drawing on the idea of "otherness," the project proposed that cities are defined not only by the people who move through them, but by the many forms of life and perspectives that coexist within them. By introducing butterflies into a space shared by shoppers, commuters, business owners, children, and unhoused residents alike, the installation encouraged viewers to see the city as a place of collective stewardship rather than individual ownership. Rather than existing as an object to simply observe, the butterflies became fellow occupants of the urban landscape, prompting moments of curiosity, connection, and a broader understanding of what it means to share public space.
