A NOTE FROM FRED & DONNA ABOUT THEIR COLLECTION AND HOME
Our collection is a very personal one, shaped very much by the places we’ve lived together: Swaziland, South Africa, India, Egypt, the UK and, now, Denver. We collect art because we love it and the key question we ask when considering a purchase is, “do we want to live with that piece?” To us the point of owning art is that we get the privilege of living with it, every day and everywhere in our home.
Some pieces have a particular meaning to us because the context from which they come is one that we experienced on a daily basis when we lived in a place—the concepts of space and privacy in India; the urban landscape of Johannesburg.
Some come from artists with whom we have established close friendships, and so the context of those works is even deeper for us, informed by our relationships, by spending time with the artists in their homes and studios.
Some are just, to our eyes, beautiful; and while concept is meaningful and important, so is care and craft.
Not every piece you will see has a story, but many of them do, and those stories comprise much of the last thirty-something years of our lives.
When we made the Boiler House our home, we wanted it to be not just a place where art was hung, but also a place where art was woven into the fabric of the building. And so you will see some site-specific commissions—kitchen cabinets, a powder room and a structural column all became a canvas for artists we came to know in Denver.
The building itself was built in 1942, part of a larger Army Medical Depot built to support the war effort. The Boiler House housed three coal-fired boilers which heated the campus through underground steam tunnels. Though the boilers are long-gone, other elements remain, including the smokestack and the coal silo, the upper half of which is now a library.
