ABOUT: OAX, STEPHAN WERK, & TONY WHITE

“OAX” is meant to create a space for local community connections while encouraging broader cultural awareness by also showcasing a range of artisan crafts created by Werk and White’s friends from Oaxaca.

Stephan Werk is a Denver-based commercial and travel photographer, and filmmaker who directed the 2021 documentary “Sons of Mezcal.”

  • “Until now, much of this photography has remained unseen, offering a different perspective on a place that has profoundly influenced my life and the way I see the world,” Werk says.

Tony White was a longtime local journalist before moving to Oaxaca in 2020, where he created deep friendships and met his wife within the region’s mezcal communities. They launched their cultural tour business Almas Viejas in 2020.

  • “I want people to look deeper into this thing called mezcal. There is a name and face behind each bottle, a family encompassed within a brand, and an entire culture held in a single copita,” White says.

Werk and White also collaborated on Sons of Mezcal, which premiered at Denver’s Mayan Theater in 2021, followed by numerous screenings, notably in Oaxaca City’s famed Teatro Macedonio Alacalá in 2022. The film is available to stream online.

  • “What began as a film evolved into a lasting personal connection with Oaxaca and its people,” Werk says.
