A. Alonso Aguirre is Presidential Advisor for Global Impact and Strategic Alliances at Colorado State University, where he advances globally engaged, transdisciplinary approaches to today’s most pressing biodiversity and sustainability challenges. He previously served as Dean of the Warner College of Natural Resources. An internationally recognized leader in wildlife management, conservation medicine, and One Health, Aguirre brings more than 35 years of experience working at the intersection of ecosystem health, biodiversity conservation, and public policy. He holds a veterinary degree as well as master’s and doctoral degrees in wildlife biology and protected area management. His leadership emphasizes experiential education, socioecological systems and resilience, and the preparation of future environmental leaders equipped to navigate a rapidly changing world. Prior to joining CSU, Aguirre was Professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at George Mason University. His work spans more than 30 countries and focuses on endangered species conservation, ecosystem resilience, and community-based approaches to sustainability. Aguirre co-founded the discipline of Conservation Medicine, the journal EcoHealth, and the International Association for Ecology and Health. He has authored more than 180 peer-reviewed publications and five books, served on the National Academy of Sciences Board on Life Sciences, advised governments across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, and briefed both the U.S. and Mexican Congresses on environmental and health issues. His contributions have been recognized with numerous international honors, including Mexico’s Conservation Merit Bicentennial Award and Finland’s Harry Jalanka Memorial Medal, the highest global distinction in his field. His hobbies include drawing cartoons, playing the guitar and salsa dancing.
